Jenny Allsopp on "Working for women's rights in Jordan"
Last Thursday I attended Femmes en Resistance (Women in a State of Resistance), a round-table discussion with representatives from female resistance movements in Burkina Faso, France, and the Maghreb. This event was held in Montpellier as part of The 19th Quinzaine des Tiers-Mondes, a fortnight of events highlighting the struggles of various minorities and resistance groups across the globe. Although I am aware that each state has individual needs, the impressive degree of alliance and supp

GLOBAL TRENDS UNFORESEEN
This is the report (Global Trends 2025: A Transformed World) that came out last week to headlines screaming about U.S. inadequacies in future global competition. No wonder. Its key theme: Drill, baby, drill. The US National Intelligence Council (NIC) seems to have derived one insight from its research and reporting: Be afraid, be very afraid. These “intelligence” folks must have used the researchers responsible for convincing the White home there were weapons of mass destruction in Saddam Hu

How the Arabs treat their own
The descendants of 'Palestinians' who purportedly fled from the Haifa area during Israel's 1948 War of Independence will be 'resettled' in Canada and Sweden next week after being trapped on the Iraqi-Syrian border since Saddam Hussein's downfall. Note how the media ignore why these people are 'refugees' in the first place and does not even consider the possibility that the Arabs ought to be responsible for them. Informed sources in AL-Tanaf camp in the buffer strip between Iraq and Syria, that Sw

Stop Kissing Children Who Aren't Yours!
What is it with people who give themselves the right to kiss other people's kids without their permission? It's very common here in Tunisia, and I don't know what screwed up logic these people are following that says they can kiss a child without even asking their parents first? They just lean down on the child, or pick them up, kiss them straight on the cheek, if not on the mouth sometimes, and then go on normally with their lives as if nothing ever happened! It's just so normal to them

My God, if You exist, make Your existance known to me!
Ave Maria Meditations A sob from the heart: My God, if You exist, make Your existance known to me! from Bl. Charles de Foucauld before his conversion As soon as I believed there was a God, I understood I could do nothing else but live for him, my religious vocation dates from the same moment as my faith: God is so great. There is such a difference between God and everything that is not. EXCERPTS FROM THE WRITINGS OF BLESSED CHARLES (feast day is Dec. 1st) July 15, 19

Europeans Doom the Blue Fin Tuna
I thought Europe was every green, every the time, yet the EU voted, in reality to increase the catches of the already overfished Blue Fin Tuna. At a meeting that began in Morocco on 19 November and is still on-going, the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) – composed of the EU (represented by the European Commission), Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Syria, Japan and other countries with a stake in the bluefin tuna industry – backed an overall total allowable c

India, continued
I spent the day touring Hyderabad. There are actually two Hyderabads: One is young, new, quick-developing, consumerist, americanised, ‘owned’ by TATA. The other is old, traditional, below-developed, messy, full of history, full of life. Everyone is doing something, no one is procrastinating. My semi-literate cab driver gave me a guided tour of the main sites (newcomers: it’s a good idea to hire a cab for the entire day, it’s very cheap). So far I have been to Charminar (an iconic 16th centur

Gates of Vienna News Feed 11/29/2008
Besides the latest from Mumbai, the most interesting news tonight concerns the BNP. The Labour government’s policy of overt persecution towards the BNP and other dissenters has backfired, and the BNP is gaining in strength. There are a couple of reports below about yesterday’s BNP demonstration in Liverpool, which was mounted as a response to the arrest of three party members for handing out leaflets. Thanks to C. Cantoni, Conservative Swede, Diana West, Gaia, GLT, Insubria, JD, Paul Green, Steen

Gates of Vienna News Feed 11/28/2008The major story of the day is still the situation in Mumbai. Once again, there are a lot of articles included. Scroll to “South Asia” and look at the AKI articles in particular.A consensus is emerging that at least part of the attack was planned and launched from Pakistan. Needless to say, this will have major implications for the Indian response. Thanks to AA, Andy Bostom, C. Cantoni, Holger Danske, Insubria, JD, Rolf Krake, Srdja Trifkovic, TB, VH, Yorkshire

The Politics of Oil, War and Terrorism: Towards a New Obama Policy?
George Gregoriou / Greek News | December 1, 2008 The pursuit of oil through war is not unique to the George Bush. Empires require imperial politics and leaders. Bush I declared the New World Order in the early 1990s in the dessert (oil) fields in Saudi Arabia, with the collapse of the former Soviet Union. This New World Order was like the Old World Order, with one exception. The US was the only superpower, with a license to plunder the world for spheres of influence, raw materials, markets, e

Emerson: Time to Call a Jihadist Just That
All throughout the holiday and weekend, watching CNN coverage of the Mumbai terrorists attacks, my husband and I wondered, "Where's Steve Emerson? What does he have to say about this?" Emerson has covered Islamic terrorism in the U.S. longer than just about anyone else. He's an enclyclopedia of information, insight and analysis. He's written several books and hundreds of articles on global jihad. When Steve Emerson talks, I hear. For at least five years after 9/11, Emerson was the network

Happy Birthday at Eighty!
Today is my dad's 80th birthday and, as luck would have it, it is my 25th wedding anniversary as well. A momentous day! My dad was born in one of the poorest towns in Eastern Kentucky (D.C. politicians went there to announce the start of the WIC program), in one of the poorest single-parent households in that town. Not only did my dad run away from home at age 14 or 15, he never graduated from high school; he got his GED in the Air Force, and Princeton took him on a risk because he
